It is not about the shoes, Sarge

This story took place when I was serving in the army as a conscript.

I remember it was the first time I participated in our unit run after I was posted to the unit. At that time I was wearing the running shoes issued by the army. The sergeant from another section teased me, saying the army shoes were not good for running. He said he would wear the army shoes for playing football or other rough activities, then if those shoes became unusable he would simply get a new pair from the storeman. For running he preferred a certain brand, pointing to the pair of expensive-looking track shoes he was wearing. I have no intention to advertise so I shall not mention the brand.

I smiled at his remarks. It was not wise to get into a debate, especially when the other party was holding a higher rank.

The conclusion of the unit run was he finished the run after me.
