Brief timeline of the life of Abraham in the bible

In this post, I am trying to map Abraham’s age to some events that happened in his life, as recorded in the book of Genesis in the Bible.

The first time this character appeared in the Bible, his name was Abram, as recorded in Genesis 11:27.

Abraham was 75 years old when he obeyed God to leave Harran for Canaan (Genesis 12:4-5).

Abraham was 86 years old when Ishmael was born (Genesis 16:15-16). Ishmael’s mother was Hagar, formerly an Egyptian slave.

Abraham was 99 years old when God appeared to him (Genesis 17:1). God told him the son of promise would be born the following year (Genesis 17:21). During the same encounter, a covenant was made and his name was changed from Abram to Abraham (Genesis 17:5). After the encounter, Abraham, Ishmael, and the males in the household were circumcised (Genesis 17:24-27).

Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born (Genesis 21:5).

His wife, Sarah, died at the age of 127 (Genesis 23:1) and was buried in the cave of Machpelah (Genesis 23:19). Abraham was 10 years older than Sarah (Genesis 17:17) thus Abraham was 137 years old when Sarah died.

Isaac married Rebekah when he was 40 years old (Genesis 25:20). Abraham was 140 years old at that time.

Esau and Jacob were born when Isaac was 60 years old (Genesis 25:26). Abraham was 160 years old at that time. Abraham lived to see these 2 grandsons though I am not sure if they were staying together as Abraham had other concubines and children (Genesis 25:6) after Sarah died.

Abraham died at the age of 175 and was buried in the cave of Machpelah with Sarah (see Gen 25:7-10).

One major event that took place in Abraham’s life was the instruction to sacrifice Isaac. Sadly it was not clear when it took place, thus I am unable to put a number to his age. Some believe Isaac was a teenager, while some believe Isaac was still a child at that time.
