A wise man was invited to dine at the king’s table. So the wise man sat with the royal family: the king, the queen, the prince, and the princess. At the feast the king decided to test the wise man. Pointing the chicken on the table, he asked the wise man to cut up the chicken and allocate the chicken parts for them according to their status.
The wise man stood up and took a bow. He first cut off the head and offered it to the king.
“Your Majesty, we look to you as our head to lead the kingdom to prosperity. Thus the head is for you.”
He then cut off the neck and offered it to the queen.
“Your Majesty, you are the wife to the king, supporting the king in leading the people, just like the neck supports the head. Thus the neck is for you.”
He then cut off the feet and offered them to the prince.
“Your Highness, one day you will follow in your father’s footsteps to be the king and lead the nation. Thus the feet are for you.”
He then cut off the wings and offered them to the princess.
“Your Highness, one day you will marry and leave the family and this castle. Thus the wings are for you.”
The king pointed to the body of the chicken and asked the wise man who he would allocate it to.
“Your Majesty, the body of the kingdom is made up of ordinary folks like me. Thus the body is for me.”
