Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ forgive him. [Luke 17:3-4]
Imagine this scenario. Within a span of 24 hours, every 3 to 4 hours, the same person sins against you then come to you for forgiveness. All in all, 7 times. Are you able to forgive him, up to the 7th time? Seriously by the 3rd time, I would probably have only harsh words for him instead of grace and forgiveness. Yet this is what Jesus commands us, and I think this cannot be done by our strength alone. Faith in His mercy is necessary, thus the apostles responded with “Increase our faith!” This is also a glimpse of how Jesus treats us and our sins, as He does not make us do what He Himself is unable to do.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [1 John 1:9]
