One of the first things I learnt in my Economics lesson was about public goods and private goods. I remember the teacher gave a scenario on what might happen if the police force is converted from public goods to private goods, that is, privatization. Very likely, he said, when a person reports a case he would see a chart stating the charges for different types of cases eg $100 for investigating theft cases, $200 for investigating harassment cases, $500 for investigating kidnap cases and so on. The whole class laughed at the absurdity of the scenario.
Thankfully while our government seeks to privatize certain public services, the police force is still a public goods, else I cannot imagine such a scenario happening.
