As reservists, we had to report back to camp once a year for army training. Sometimes, some of the guys could not attend the training due to various reasons, so they would need to apply for deferment. The army has guidelines to allow for deferment of the training, and new employment is a valid reason. Thus we were surprised to hear from one of the guys that he just switched jobs to be an air steward a few weeks ago. We asked him why he did not apply for deferment. He explained his boss was a retired general from the army, and the boss decided that reservist training was very important and thus he was in camp for the training. Another guy then shared that his boss gave him an unhappy look when he needed to attend reservist training. I was lucky that my boss did not give me any unhappy look when I needed to attend reservist training.
