So the men of Israel took some of their provisions, and did not ask for the counsel of the LORD. [Joshua 9:14]
The Gibeonites came to the Israelites lying that they dwelt in a faraway land and even showed the Israelites some of the stuff they brought as proof. The Israelites examined the stuff and were convinced. They then made a peace treaty with the Gibeonites. They learnt of the deception 3 days later. Thankfully for the Israelites God did not fault them for this decision; and for the Gibeonites the peace treaty was not made void. The full story is recorded in chapter 9 of Joshua.
I think the lessons we can learn from
- to ask God in prayer instead of trusting our judgement
- lies will be exposed
- to people who are willing to submit to God, God will take them in
