Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch

This post contains some of my observations and thoughts based on the text recorded in Acts 8:26-40.

  • Philip and the eunuch met in the desert. I believe they never expected the meeting.
  • The eunuch went to Jerusalem for worship.
  • The eunuch was reading a text from the book of Isaiah.
  • The eunuch acknowledged he did not understand the text he was reading, but that did not stop him from reading the scripture.
  • The eunuch asked about baptism when he saw water. It is not stated whether that was a stream, river, pond, or what.
  • The eunuch asked about baptism after hearing Philip preached about Jesus. It is not recorded what exactly Philip said, or whether he mentioned about baptism.
  • Based on Philip’s reply in verse 37, the only condition for baptism is the candidate must believe in Jesus.
  • The eunuch confessed his faith in Jesus before Philip would baptize him.
  • The eunuch had coachmen under his charge. I believe he could command one of them to fetch a bowl of water if necessary.
  • Philip and the eunuch went into the water for the baptism to take place.
