Before I was enlisted, a friend advised me to get a small padlock, instead of a heavy duty steel lock, for the locker.
“You will know why when you lose the key”, he said.
That did not happen to me but one of the guys in the same bunk. It was evening, after a day of outfield training, and we were back in the bunk. Then one guy realized he had lost his key. We told him to search carefully, especially his pockets, or whatever possible place. But there was no sight of his key.
Eventually one of the guys suggested breaking the padlock. The owner was agreeable. Luckily he used a small padlock. We watched with astonishment how that small padlock was easily broken after a few hard knocks with the rifle butt. It would not be possible if he had used a heavy duty steel lock.
