Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” [Luke 5:5]
The story of how Peter came to follow Jesus, as recorded in the book of Luke, shows us 2 important decisions Peter made. Having toiled the previous night without any catch, Peter and his partners were rather discouraged. But when Jesus told Peter to cast the net again, Peter made the decision to trust Jesus and cast the net. He did not question Jesus. And the result was a big catch. Sometimes we try to do things using our strength and experience, and it yields poor or no result. Perhaps it is time we learn from Peter to rely on His word, and the outcome might be very different.
The story goes on to record that they caught many fishes, and Peter called his partners on the other boat for help. Then both boats began to sink due to the weight of the fishes. Imagine the money that could fetch in the market. Yet Peter, together with 3 of his partners, decided to forsake that potential windfall and follow Jesus. When we need to choose between Jesus and some other thing (eg money), hopefully we can remember what the 4 fishermen chose.
