The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place; but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, until there was no remedy. Therefore He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or infirm; He gave them all into his hand. [2 Chronicles 36:15-17]
Zedekiah was the last king of Judah. Zedekiah and the people did evil in the sight of the LORD. We can see from the above verses that despite their transgressions, the LORD showed grace and gave them chances by sending messengers to warn them again and again. The messengers were faithful in carrying out their duties. All this was because of His compassion for the people and the land. Unfortunately the warnings were not heeded, and they paid a heavy price. The invaders from Babylon had no compassion for them.
This is a very sad story. The people rejected the LORD who had compassion for them, and eventually suffered in the hands of invaders who had no compassion for them. The LORD, with His grace and compassion, sent Jesus to us. Please do not follow the footsteps of those people by rejecting His grace and compassion.
