Manasseh was an evil king, as recorded in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles. He did evil in the sight of the LORD, and even led his people to perform the evil acts. They turned to foreign gods. The LORD showed Manasseh and his people grace by speaking to them, but sadly they would not hear. Later Manasseh was taken as a prisoner of war to Babylon, and in his affliction, he turned to the LORD. The LORD heard his prayer and brought him back to Jerusalem. Restored as king, Manasseh removed the foreign gods and commanded the people to serve the LORD. The full story is recorded in 2 Chronicles chapter 33.
Matthew Henry noted in his commentary that thought we might go to the LORD because of affliction, the LORD would not reject us if we seek Him in sincerity. Manasseh’s story shows this very clearly, leaving us to marvel at His mercy and grace.
