So David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel. [2 Samuel 5:12]
This is an interesting verse as it gives us a peep into King David’s mind. Quoting from David Guzik’s commentary, King David was aware of 3 things:
- “God called him and established him over Israel.”
- “the kingdom belonged to God – it was His kingdom.”
- “God wanted to use him as a channel to bless His people. It was not for David’s sake that he was lifted up, but for the sake of His people Israel.”
In brief, David knew his greatness came from the LORD. This great kingdom can also be viewed as a precursor to the greater kingdom Jesus would establish.
The lesson for us is this – when we achieve greatness or success in our work, or whatever we do, may we also remember we owe it to the LORD and His grace, for the sake of His work.
