Book review: The five love languages – singles edition (by Gary Chapman)

Title: The five love languages – singles edition

Author: Gary Chapman

Publisher: Northfield Publishing

This book is about giving and receiving love in all relationships: between friends, colleagues, family, classmates, and so on. The author wrote that there are generally 5 expressions of love, which he called the 5 love languages:

  1. Words of affirmation
  2. Gifts
  3. Acts of service
  4. Quality time
  5. Physical touch

We express love most of the time in one of the 5 ways. Using the lingo of this book, we speak a primary love language. But the other party might speak another love language, thus it might result in the other party not feeling loved when we do not speak in their love language and vice versa.

In the first section of this book, Gary Chapman explained the 5 love languages and their variants (dialects). He gave examples using personal stories from his experience. We can identify our primary love language and also of our loved ones in this section. The second section is on applying the 5 love languages in our homes, workplace, and so on. Again, examples from personal stories were used. I would say these personal stories aid in understanding the concept. At the end of the book there is an assessment to help us in identifying our primary love language. For those interested, there is also an online version.

Understanding the 5 love languages is not hard. Learning the other 4 that are not our primary love language is the hard part, yet it is vital in enhancing all human relationships. I agree with the author that we should make an effort to learn all the love languages.

Learning to speak love and appreciation in a language the other person can receive is the key to enhancing all human relationships.

PS: I received this book as a gift from a friend. I have not received any form of compensation for writing this post. I have no material connection to the publisher or author mentioned in the post.

  2. I read the couples version of this at the recommendation of my husband who did it as a Bible study on an internship. I agree, it is important to learn all of the languages to support others. Its not always as intuitive as we think it is.
